DEUTERONOMIOS 7:1-7
Cuando Jehová tu Dios te haya introducido en la tierra en la cual entrarás para tomarla, y haya echado de delante de ti a muchas naciones, al heteo, al gergeseo, al amorreo, al cananeo, al ferezeo, al heveo y al jebuseo, siete naciones mayores y más poderosas que tú, y Jehová tu Dios las haya entregado delante de ti, y las hayas derrotado, las destruirás del todo; no harás con ellas alianza, ni tendrás de ellas misericordia. Y no emparentarás con ellas; no darás tu hija a su hijo, ni tomarás a su hija para tu hijo. Porque desviará a tu hijo de en pos de mí, y servirán a dioses ajenos; y el furor de Jehová se encenderá sobre vosotros, y te destruirá pronto. Mas así habéis de hacer con ellos: sus altares destruiréis, y quebraréis sus estatuas, y destruiréis sus imágenes de Acera, y quemaréis sus esculturas en el fuego. Porque tú eres pueblo santo para Jehová tu Dios; Jehová tu Dios te ha escogido para serle un pueblo especial, más que todos los pueblos que están sobre la tierra. No por ser vosotros más que todos los pueblos os ha querido Jehová y os ha escogido, pues vosotros erais el más insignificante de todos los pueblos.
El mandamiento de Dios estaba claro: ¡Derrota! ¡Conquista! Destruyan totalmente a todos los enemigos de la tierra prometida. Colocándose frente al pueblo y predicando, Moisés advirtió al pueblo que la conquista de la tierra prometida no seria fácil. Algunos enemigos importantes se opondrían a ellos; por lo tanto, una estrategia bien clara debía ser buscada, en orden de poder conquistar al enemigo. Moisés no aló, estimuló. El enemigo era más grande y de más alcance que Israel. De hecho, él enumeró siete de los enemigos principales que los Israelitas debían hacer frente (Deuteronomio. 7: 1):
Moisés explicó la estrategia cuidadosamente y expuso un fuerte discurso al pueblo (Deuteronomio. 7:2 - 5).
- Los Israelitas debían destruir al enemigo totalmente: no hagan ningún tratado con ellos, ni le muestren misericordia. El enemigo debía ser aniquilado totalmente. Por generaciones, los Cananitas habían sido una gente cruel y salvaje. En los ojos de Dios, su “copa de iniquidad estaba llena” (Génesis 15:16). Habían alcanzado el punto cuando ya no se arrepentirían ni corregirían su comportamiento. Como pueblo, continuarían en sus maneras pecadoras, continuarían propagando su mal, brutalidad, anarquía, y violencia sobre la tierra. Por lo tanto, Dios utilizaba a los Israelitas para ejecutar el juicio sobre los Cananitas crueles y salvajes.
- Los Israelitas no debían casarse con los incrédulos malvados de las naciones Cananita (Deuteronomio. 7:3 - 4). La razón se indica claramente: debido a la influencia y el descreimiento malvado de la gente pecadora. Observe que los padres debían prevenir el casamiento con los cananitas: no debían permitir que sus hijos o hijas se casasen con un incrédulo. El incrédulo se convertiría en un tropiezo, llevaría al creyente lejos de Dios en la adoración falsa. El resultado sería catastrófico: la cólera de Dios sería despertada y su juicio ejecutado. Y destruirían al Israelita desobediente debido a su idolatría y rechazamiento de Dios.
- Los Israelitas debían destruir toda la adoración falsa de los enemigos (Deuteronomio 7: 5). Esto incluye todos sus altares, piedras sagradas, postes de Acera, y sus ídolos. Las instrucciones estaban claras: eran no permitir a ningún dios falso, ninguna adoración falsa en su medio. Eran destruir los altares de otros dioses y de la adoración falsa. Esto era una necesidad absoluta a fin de que el pueblo no se contaminara con la adoración falsa y se apartara de Dios.
Éste es un cuadro que indica que los creyentes no deben comprometerse con los pecadores y los incrédulos. El pueblo de Dios debe vivir una vida de separación, nunca se asocia o se ata a los nos creyentes. La razón está clara: a fin de que no sean influenciados por las maneras pecadoras, malvadas de los incrédulos. La gente de Dios nunca puede unirse en yugo desigual con los nos creyente. En ninguna forma. Dios sabe que no hay creyente bastante fuerte para oponerse a la influencia mundana de los incrédulos si se asocian a ellos. Él sabe que las maneras mundanas de los no creyentes agotarán eventualmente la resistencia del creyente. El creyente cometerá el adulterio espiritual, es decir, se apartará de Dios a dioses de este mundo (las atracciones, las posesiones, y los placeres de este mundo). Las alianzas y las asociaciones permanentes con los nos creyentes llevarán a la endogamia con los nos creyente. El creyente debe recordar siempre que es difícil seguir siendo puro e impoluto. Es difícil estar siempre alerta contra la lujuria de la carne, la lujuria de los ojos, y al orgullo de la vida (1 Juan 2:15-16). Es difícil ser creciente y maduro en Cristo continuamente. Por esta razón, se necesita la ayuda constante de otros creyentes, particularmente la ayuda de un esposo(a) y otros miembros de familia que conozcan al Señor. Ésta es la razón por la que los creyentes no deben absolutamente mantener una relación cercana con los carnales e incrédulos de este mundo.
When the LORD your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess and drives out before you many nations—the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, seven nations larger and stronger than you and when the LORD your God has delivered them over to you and you have defeated them, then you must destroy them totally. Make no treaty with them, and show them no mercy. Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, for they will turn your sons away from following me to serve other gods, and the LORD's anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy you. This is what you are to do to them: Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones, cut down their Asherah poles and burn their idols in the fire. For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.
The charge of God was clear: Defeat! Conquer! Totally destroy all enemies of the Promised Land. Standing there preaching, Moses warned the people: the conquest of the Promised Land will not be easy. Some major enemies will oppose them; therefore, a very clear strategy had to be pursued—totally pursued—in order to conquer the enemy. Moses pulled no punches: the enemy was larger and more powerful than Israel. In fact, he listed seven of the major enemies the Israelites were to face (Deut. 7:1): Moses explained the careful strategy and issued a strong charge to the people (Deut. 7:2-5). - The Israelites were to destroy the enemy totally: make no treaty with them nor show them any mercy. The enemy was to be totally annihilated. For generations, the Canaanites had been a cruel and savage people. In God’s eyes, their “cup of iniquity was full” (Genesis 15:16). They had reached the point when they would never repent nor correct their behavior. As a people, they would continue in their sinful ways, continue to spread their evil, brutality, lawlessness, and violence upon the earth. Consequently, God was using the Israelites to execute judgment upon the cruel and savage Canaanites.
- The Israelites were not to intermarry with evil unbelievers of the Canaanite nations (Deut. 7:3-4). The reason is clearly stated: because of the evil influence and unbelief of the sinful people. Note that the parents themselves were to prevent the intermarriage: they were not to allow their sons or daughters to marry an unbeliever. The unbeliever would become a stumbling block; lead the believer away from God into false worship. The result would be catastrophic: the anger of God would be aroused and his judgment executed. The disobedient Israelite would be destroyed because of his idolatry and rejection of God.
- The Israelites must destroy all the false worship of the enemies (Deut. 7:5). This includes all their altars, sacred stones, Asherah poles, and their idols. The instructions were clear: they were to allow no false gods, no false worship in their midst. They were to destroy the altars of other gods and of false worship. This was an absolute necessity lest the people become contaminated by the false worship and turn away from God.
This is a picture that believers must not compromise with sinners and unbelievers. God’s people are to live a life of separation, never becoming associated or tied to unbelievers. The reason is clear: lest they be influenced by the sinful, evil ways of unbelievers. God’s people must never be unequally yoked with unbelievers, not in anything. God knows that no believer is strong enough to resist the worldly influence of unbelievers if he is always associated with them. He knows that the worldly ways of unbelievers will eventually wear down the resistance of the believer. The believer will eventually commit spiritual adultery, that is, turn away from God to the gods of this world (the attractions, possessions, and pleasures of this world). Alliances and permanent associations with unbelievers will lead to intermarriage with unbelievers.
The believer must always remember: it is difficult to remain pure and untainted. It is difficult to always be alert to the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life (1 John 2:15-16). It is difficult to continually be growing and maturing in Christ. For this reason, he needs the constant help of other believers, in particular the help of a spouse and other family members who know the Lord. This is the reason the believer absolutely must not carry on a close fellowship with the carnal, fleshly unbelievers of this world
